Extended Commands

X-10 added Extended Commands to their PLC protocol when they introduced the AM14A and LM14A circa 1997. Leviton implemented support for some extended commands in some of their dimmer switches at about the same time but they confuse things by referring to them as Preset Dim commands. X-10 Europe implements Extended Commands in the LD11 DIN Rail Dimmer.

The protocol allows for two-way communication, scenes (called groups in the documentation) and provides for 64 dim levels which can be set directly with a single command. The Extended Dim commands do not have the problems associated with Preset Dim commands.

The IR543 cannot send extended commands. The IR543AH (a third party modified IR543) and the IR7243W can send these commands.

Scenes are another way to accomplish the same thing with certain dimmers.
